There are beautiful gardens everywhere, and a great many of them have been the created by talented self taught gardeners who did most, if not all, the work themselves. The results can only be called spectacular and nowhere is this more evident than in the case of this garden located in historic Highlands in Edmonton. This garden is a perfect environment for the 1913 house it surrounds (featured on our web site earlier this season). The picturesque front garden is understated and peaceful. The large veranda is one of owner Audrey Hayward’s favorite spots to relax after a long day at work. Wicker and hand made twig furniture, and an ornate white cast iron table and chairs are arranged in groupings. The space is perfect for entertaining or just spending time with her three cats. The rocker style teak bench soothes away the strains of the day.
The entire area is in part shade a good part of the day due to the many mature trees that line the street boulevards so the flowers that surround the veranda are mostly hardy regional varieties; delphiniums, ostrich ferns, and day lilies in unusual colors. The verdant textures, rather than vibrant color, create a harmonious, peaceful feeling.
The side yards are not forgotten. The side that faces west is home to an Italian inspired cobblestone courtyard anchored by a large fountain and a gazebo. )As shown here - a garden project in progress!) A large decorative black cast iron gate separates this part of the yard from the front yard. On the east side, the front garden’s plants blend subtly into the climbing hops and Virginia creeper that covers the lattice fencing. Trained to create an arch, the greenery creates a passageway to a secret garden and the back yard – and what a back yard! Built on different levels using concrete, wood decking and paving blocks, it is a feast for the senses.
Audrey is a great believer in creating special spaces in her garden – each with its own personality. Once the current exterior renovations are complete the next project is to redo the front garden. With this homeowner’s deft touch in the garden, success is definitely guaranteed! Written by: Johanne Yakula From Times Past
