How to Create a Garden Mural for a Child's Room Creating a Garden Mural One of my favorite clients, Alison (shown here) contacted me to create a garden mural on two small walls in her daughter's bedroom. Based on what I was told about the young girl's preferences, we decided that birdhouses and a trellis would be suitable for the room. A design was created on paper and discussed with my clients. The design was then drawn free hand on the wall. It was important that the perspective of the room be in scale with a child's height.
There were time and budget constraints so it was necessary to work as quickly as possible all the while ensuring that the project go smoothly. There were two walls - one as shown above and one on the opposite. Don, the father, built a wonderful headboard and birdhouse book case out of recycled wood.
The paints used were a combination of regular wall paints tinted with acrylic paints and tinting agents. The softer colors at the base of the trellis and birdhouses were created using a clear tinted glaze. Although not shown in the photographs, bugs, butterflies and a red salamander were added to the room during a subsequent and final visit. The project took about twelve hours to complete from beginning to end to do the two walls. It was to be a surprise. Sid slept and lived in a guest bedroom while her bedroom was having its make over. New bedding, window treatment and bookcase / headboard coordinated in color and style with the mural. When the room was unveiled, she was thrilled - and after all that's all any of us ever wanted.
